Our final day and departure

Hire car and early boarding

sunny 32 °C

A lovely day with no breeze for the first time since we arrived. Checked out at 8am and drove to the South Townsville entertainment precinct in Palmer street. Had an excellent breakfast although the restaurant could have been cleaner. Overlooked the main city and watched the locals arriving for the work day.

Enjoyed a slow drive around the western part of town, filled the car and got to the airport early. Mandy's turn to be examined by the magic wand as we passed through security.

The Qantas club is very nice, small but relaxing and friendly. Still no monitor advice on jetstar flights so we will be keeping a close ear out for our departure call.

A nice light lunch to go. We leave at 2pm arriving in Sydney at 6pm because of daylight saving. Should be home by 10pm so its going to be a long day. Kids; I doubt that you are reading this but please, please have the house tidy. I don't care if you haven't fed the dog, she could still live for another week on built up fat stores.

Travel Day

Charters Towers and beyond

sunny 32 °C

A long walk this morning to pick up the hire car. When it was booked I thought the office was in town. About 90 minutes later at a fast walk we reached the office. Middle of the day and 30 degrees was a challenge. Had a late breakfast in town after a much needed sleep in. A concert at the Jupiters Casino by an american rapper was to say the least interesting. Jupiters management really need to decide whether they want to be involved in accommodation or entertainment because they aren't catering to both.

Drive out to Charters Towers took about 90 minutes. The road was good and is well used by large road trains. These usually have 3 or 4 trailers and cruise along at 100km p/h. Back road to Ayr which took us slightly longer. Saw massive black snake on the side of the road, emu's and a turtle. Mandy missed the lot.

Very little to see or do in both towns but certainly a contrasting scenery. I'd never seen water west of Townsville and this is obviously a left over from last years high rainfall.

Had a brilliant dinner in Palmer Street South Townsville at a restaurant called The Salt. We had crocodile spring rolls, moreton bay bugs and barramundi. Oh 3 coronas too.

Stopped for a few drinks (note kids we walked......) at the FNQ brewery on the way back to the casino. This place was spectacularly fitted out and very comfortable. The local light beer was quite good.

End of Day 2

Lots of walking

sunny 32 °C

PA220017.jpgPA220021.jpgThe weather has been great. A little windy but that keeps the temp down a little....its only 32 degrees. Had an interesting dinner last night with barramundi spring rolls with fetta and coriander as an entree and then cajun chicken. The restaurant overlooked the water and was very busy. Tonight we'll slum it at the Seaview Hotel beer garden to watch the world cup final.

The Jupiter's casino has a rapper performing and its loud as....It will be finishing around 10.30 tonight so best we stay away.

Had a very long walk early today along the foreshore to Kissing Point and then back into the mall for breakfast. The "cotters markets" were on at the mall and they are very popular with lots of local produce, art and crafts. Ellie would have loved the batik and jewellery. This afternoon we're relaxing at the Coffee Club on the Strand enjoying the people walking by.

It's a very busy place after 4pm in the cool of the afternoon with lots of families down enjoying the parkland and activities. This morning the local 2 surf life saving clubs had nippers events on and there would have been at least 150 kids. Amazing not a ripple in sight with respect of surf and doubt whether there is ever outside of a force 3 cyclone.

End of our first full day

overcast 24 °C

Walked into the CBD for breakfast and then onto the coffee club so that we could access the internet. The CBD is dead with a capital D but the foreshore area is pretty good.

There is a concert by some rap artist tomorrow at the Jupiter Casino from 3pm to 10pm. It could be a little too loud so we are going over to Magnetic Island for the day so we will be able to hear it from there at a more reasonable level. The kids know the dude flo rider or some such thing name.

Pretty busy night, the Townsville Crocs are playing the Perth Wildcats next door to the casino so it's pretty full on. We walked to dinner at a place on the water called Jamacia Joes. Very popular watering hole as is everywhere in NQ and now it's coffee and wi-fi at the coffee club. Very little wi-fi here and doesn't really cater terribly well for the tourists.

Another day tomorrow with fine weather again hopefully.

First day in Townsville

semi-overcast 29 °C

Arrived at the casino around 9.30 last night after a pretty long day. After a nice relaxing bath and hot shower (the bathroom was bigger than the apartment) we slept like logs. Walked into town this morning for a liesurely breakfast and a coffee to kill for. Townsville has changed dramatically since our last visit, a lot more nightclubs (as if we're likely to use them) and stacks of closed shops. The mall has gone and replaced with street scape but few eateries.

A quite day today, long walk and early dinner.
